Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12) is one of the most strategically important aviation units in the United States Marine Corps, serving as the primary fixed-wing combat aviation element of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Known as “The Ready Group,” MAG-12 is the forward-deployed Marine aviation strike force in the Western Pacific, maintaining constant readiness to respond to any contingency across the Indo-Pacific theater as part of III Marine Expeditionary Force.
MAG-12’s component squadrons represent the cutting edge of Marine Corps aviation, including VMFA-121 (the Marine Corps’ first operational F-35B Lightning II squadron), VMFA-242 Bats, VMGR-152 Sumos, MWSS-171, and MALS-12. Together, these units provide fifth-generation strike fighter capability, aerial refueling, logistical support, and base operations that sustain Marine aviation operations throughout Japan and the broader Pacific region. MAG-12’s World War II lineage traces back to the legendary campaigns of the Pacific Theater, and today the group carries that fighting heritage forward as a cornerstone of America’s commitment to its Pacific allies.
