Description
**Officially Licensed US Navy VF-114 Aardvarks Sticker — Fighter Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VF-114 Aardvarks — the squadron that got its name from a comic strip, then went out and earned five MiG kills over Vietnam. That cartoon nose-art hid a killer instinct.
VF-114 was established as VBF-19 on 20 January 1945 at NAS Alameda, California. Originally known as the “Executioners,” the squadron adopted the “Aardvarks” nickname in 1963, inspired by the resemblance between their new F-4 Phantom II and the aardvark character from the B.C. comic strip. VF-114 became the first deployable Pacific Fleet squadron to fly the F-4 Phantom in 1961 and made five combat cruises to Vietnam with CVW-11, scoring five MiG kills. The Aardvarks transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in the mid-1970s and deployed aboard USS Enterprise and USS Kitty Hawk, winning the coveted “Mutha” trophy and the Pacific Fleet Battle “E” multiple times. VF-114 participated in Operation Praying Mantis in the Persian Gulf in 1988 and was disestablished on 30 April 1993 as part of the post-Cold War drawdown.
