Description
**Officially Licensed US Navy VF-103 Sluggers Sticker — Fighter Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VF-103 Sluggers — the squadron that went from swinging baseball bats to swinging skull-and-crossbones when they inherited the Jolly Rogers name. But this sticker honors the original Slugger identity.
VF-103, the “Sluggers,” was activated on 1 May 1952 and equipped with the FG-1D Corsair. After transitioning to the F9F Cougar, VF-103 became the “Flying Cougars” before adopting the Sluggers nickname in 1957 upon receiving the supersonic F8U-1 Crusader. The squadron was one of the first to fly the Crusader, and during a 1958 Mediterranean cruise, VF-103 shocked British pilots by intercepting their Canberra bombers before they could begin their mock attack runs. VF-103 later flew the F-4 Phantom II and transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat in January 1983, becoming one of the last fighter squadrons to do so. In October 1985, VF-103 participated in the dramatic interception of the Egyptian 737 carrying the Achille Lauro hijackers. In 1995, after VF-84 was disestablished, VF-103 adopted the famous Jolly Rogers name and insignia, carrying that tradition forward as VFA-103.
