Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 531 (VMFA-531) — “Grey Ghosts”

Marine Night Fighter Squadron 531, the Grey Ghosts, was commissioned on 16 November 1942 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina — the Marine Corps’ first dedicated night-fighter squadron. Due to the uniqueness of their night-fight mission, VMF(N)-531 was placed under the direct supervision of the Commandant of the Marine Corps until combat-ready. Responding to Japanese night attacks on Guadalcanal, the Grey Ghosts deployed to the South Pacific, arriving at Renard Field in the Russell Islands on 11 September 1943. Flying their first combat patrol on 16 September, they became the first naval aviation night-fighter squadron to operate in the South Pacific, shooting down 12 enemy aircraft during their tour across the Russell Islands, Vella Lavella, and Bougainville.

The Grey Ghosts’ legacy of firsts continued for five decades. They became the first Marine Fighter Squadron to join NORAD in early 1963 and played a significant role during the Cuban Missile Crisis from NAS Key West. On 10 April 1965, 15 F-4B Phantoms from VMFA-531 arrived at Da Nang Air Base, becoming the first land-based Marine Corps jets in the Vietnam War. In November 1979, deployed aboard USS Coral Sea as part of CVW-14, VMFA-531 and VMFA-323 provided the first all-Marine maritime air superiority for an entire Carrier Battle Group — spending 102 consecutive days at sea during the Iranian hostage crisis and participating in Operation Eagle Claw. The squadron received its first F/A-18 Hornet on 29 May 1983, becoming the third fleet squadron to fly the new fighter.

The Grey Ghosts were decommissioned on 27 March 1992 after 50 years of distinguished service across World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War.

Perfect For: VMFA-531 Grey Ghosts veterans, F-4 Phantom II and F/A-18 Hornet enthusiasts, World War II night-fighter historians, Vietnam-era Marine jet aviation collectors, and MCAS Cherry Point and El Toro alumni.
