U.S. Army AH-1 Cobra — Attack Helicopter Sticker

The Bell AH-1 Cobra is the world’s first purpose-built attack helicopter, developed in the mid-1960s as an interim armed helicopter gunship for the United States Army. The AH-1 was derived from the proven UH-1 Huey airframe and was designed to escort troop-carrying helicopters and provide suppressive fire for ground troops in Vietnam. The prototype YAH-1G first flew on 7 September 1965, and the production AH-1G HueyCobra entered service in June 1967, arriving in Vietnam with the 334th Armed Helicopter Company just months later.

In Vietnam, the Cobra revolutionized close air support and aerial escort tactics. Flying low and fast, AH-1 crews provided devastating firepower with their 7.62mm miniguns, 40mm grenade launchers, and 2.75-inch rocket pods, amassing tens of thousands of combat hours escorting slicks, supporting ground operations, and hunting enemy armor and fortifications. The Army operated multiple variants including the AH-1G, AH-1Q (with TOW missile capability), AH-1S (improved engines and systems), and the fully modernized AH-1F. At its peak, the Army operated over 1,100 Cobras across active and reserve units.

The AH-1 Cobra served the U.S. Army for over three decades before being retired in favor of the AH-64 Apache. The last Army Cobras were withdrawn from active service in the late 1990s, though they continued with Army National Guard units until 2001. The Cobra’s legacy lives on in the Marine Corps’ AH-1Z Viper, a heavily upgraded twin-engine variant that remains in frontline service today.
