USMC “Skid Kids” — Clear Vinyl Sticker
The term “Skid Kids” is a badge of honor within Marine Corps aviation, proudly claimed by the pilots, aircrew, and maintainers who fly and support the Marine Corps’ legendary skid-equipped helicopters — the AH-1 Cobra/Viper and UH-1 Huey/Venom. Unlike their wheel-equipped counterparts in the medium and heavy-lift helicopter communities, skid helicopter crews operate lighter, faster, and closer to the ground, providing the offensive firepower, armed escort, close air support, and utility transport that Marine ground forces depend on in combat.
The Marine Corps’ skid helicopter tradition dates back to the introduction of the UH-1E Huey in the early 1960s, when Marine light helicopter squadrons deployed to Vietnam flying armed Hueys in some of the war’s most dangerous close air support missions. The addition of the AH-1J SeaCobra in 1969 gave Marine aviation its first purpose-built attack helicopter, and the lineage has continued through the AH-1T, AH-1W Super Cobra, and today’s AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom. Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons (HMLAs) operate a composite mix of 18 AH-1Z Vipers and 9 UH-1Y Venoms, providing the Marine Air-Ground Task Force with organic offensive air support, armed escort, forward air control, and casualty evacuation.
The Skid Kids identity unites Marines across all HMLA squadrons — from HMLA-169 Vipers and HMLA-267 Stingers on the West Coast to HMLA-167 Warriors and HMLA-269 Gunrunners on the East Coast — bound by a shared mission and the distinctive clatter of skid-equipped rotors.
Perfect For: Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) Marines, AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom aircrew, Cobra and Huey pilots and crew chiefs, skid helicopter maintainers, and USMC rotary-wing aviation enthusiasts.
Skid Kids — lighter, faster, and always in the fight, the heart of Marine attack helicopter aviation.
