Description
**Officially Licensed USMC VMFA-122 Flying Leathernecks Sticker — Marine Fighter Attack Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VMFA-122 Flying Leathernecks — the first Marine squadron to fly jets, the first Marine aerial demonstration team, and one of the first to fly the F-35B Lightning II. From Pappy Boyington’s Corsairs to fifth-generation stealth fighters, this squadron has always been first in line.
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 (VMFA-122), now the “Flying Leathernecks,” was commissioned on 1 March 1942 at Camp Kearny, California. Originally the “Candystripers,” the squadron flew F4F Wildcats as part of the Cactus Air Force at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, then transitioned to F4U Corsairs under the command of Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, accounting for 35½ aerial kills. In November 1947, VMF-122 became the first Marine squadron to fly jet-propelled aircraft when it received the FH-1 Phantom, and used it to form the Marines’ first and only aerial demonstration team — the “Flying Leathernecks.” The squadron flew F-8 Crusaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis, F-4 Phantoms in Vietnam from Da Nang (dropping 4,800 tons of ordnance in five months), and transitioned to F/A-18 Hornets in 1986. In 2017, VMFA-122 transitioned to the F-35B Lightning II at MCAS Yuma, entering the fifth-generation era.
