Known widely as the “Beirut Battalion,” 1/8 is forever linked to the devastating October 23, 1983, bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, where 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers were killed in one of the deadliest attacks on American military personnel since World War II.
