VA-23 Black Knights — from Reserve weekend warriors in Akron, Ohio, to front-line attack pilots flying combat strikes over Khe Sanh. This squadron proved that reservists could hit just as hard as the regulars.
VA-23, the “Black Knights,” was established as Reserve Fighter Squadron VF-653 in December 1949 at NAS Akron, Ohio. The squadron relocated to NAS Alameda on 16 April 1951, was redesignated VF-151 on 4 February 1953, then VA-151 on 7 February 1956, and finally VA-23 on 23 February 1959. The Black Knights flew the FJ-4B Fury before transitioning to the A-4 Skyhawk for their attack role. In March 1968, VA-23 deployed with Carrier Air Wing 19 aboard USS Ticonderoga and conducted flight operations in the Sea of Japan during Operation Formation Star following the capture of USS Pueblo by North Korea. In April 1968, the Black Knights flew combat strikes around the besieged Marine base at Khe Sanh in South Vietnam, providing critical close air support during one of the war’s most intense sieges. VA-23 was disestablished on 1 April 1970.
