**Officially Licensed USMC VMFA-251 Thunderbolts Sticker — Marine Fighter Attack Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
VMFA-251 Thunderbolts — “Custos Caelorum” — Guardians of the Sky. They intercepted Soviet Bear bombers over Iceland, flew the first Marine combat missions in Europe since WWI over Bosnia, and were the last Marine F-4 Phantom squadron on the East Coast. Eight decades of thunder.
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMFA-251), the “Thunderbolts,” was commissioned on 1 December 1941 as Marine Observation Squadron 251 at NAS North Island, California. Flying F4F Wildcats and later F4U Corsairs during WWII, the squadron fought across Guadalcanal, the Southern Solomons, Santa Cruz, Luzon, and the Philippines. In Korea, VMA-251 had the distinction of flying the last Marine aircraft in combat during the Korean War on 27 July 1953. The Thunderbolts became the first Marine squadron in 2nd MAW to transition to the F-4 Phantom II in 1964 and won the 1969 Robert M. Hanson Award as the year’s outstanding Marine fighter squadron. In April 1982, they intercepted six Soviet Tu-95 Bear bombers from hot pad alert in Iceland. After 21 years and 85,000 flight hours in Phantoms, VMFA-251 transitioned to F/A-18 Hornets in 1986. Their combat missions over Bosnia in 1994 marked the first Marine combat sorties in Europe since World War I. The Thunderbolts deactivated in April 2020 and reactivated in December 2024 at MCAS Cherry Point to fly the F-35C Lightning II.
