VA-125, the “Skylancers,” served as the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet Replacement Air Group (RAG) squadron for light attack aircraft. Based at NAS Lemoore, California, VA-125 was responsible for training replacement pilots and enlisted maintenance personnel for all West Coast A-7 Corsair II squadrons. Before the A-7, the squadron trained pilots on the A-4 Skyhawk. Every Pacific Fleet light attack pilot destined for a fleet squadron cycled through the Skylancers’ rigorous training syllabus, which included weapons delivery, carrier qualification, tactical formation flying, and mission planning. The Skylancers produced hundreds of combat-ready attack pilots who deployed throughout the Vietnam War and Cold War eras, making VA-125 one of the most important squadrons in naval aviation.
