HMH-361 “Flying Tigers” operates the CH-53E Super Stallion as a Marine heavy helicopter squadron. After decades of flying the CH-46 Sea Knight as HMM-361, the Flying Tigers transitioned to the CH-53E — the most powerful helicopter in the Western military inventory. The Super Stallion can lift 36,000 pounds externally, making it the Marine Corps’ only aircraft capable of moving heavy equipment, vehicles, and downed aircraft across the battlefield. HMH-361 provides the heavy-lift capability that no other platform in the MAGTF can match, operating from MCAS Miramar under MAG-16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
