VMM-265 “Dragons” is a Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron flying the MV-22B Osprey out of MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan, under MAG-36 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. The “(REIN)” designation means Reinforced — indicating the squadron has been augmented with additional aircraft and detachments from attack, heavy lift, and utility helicopter squadrons to serve as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) for a Marine Expeditionary Unit. The Dragons have been forward-deployed in Okinawa since 1995 and have participated in operations spanning Desert Storm, East Timor (Operation Stabilise), Iraqi Freedom, and humanitarian relief missions across the Pacific. During Desert Storm, the Dragons were part of the 5th MEB’s amphibious feint into Kuwait that successfully drew enemy forces away from the main ground attack. As the MEU ACE, VMM-265 (REIN) provides the MEU commander with the full spectrum of assault support, close air support, casualty evacuation, and reconnaissance capabilities.
