CV-59 represented a revolutionary leap in carrier design with an angled flight deck, steam catapults, and enclosed hurricane bow that became standard for every American carrier that followed. Forrestal served for nearly 40 years, including combat deployments to Vietnam and operations in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. She is perhaps best remembered for the devastating 1967 fire on her flight deck that killed 134 sailors and became a watershed moment in Navy damage control training. Her legacy as the first supercarrier is indelible.
