3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines (3/23) is a reserve infantry battalion under the 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. With companies spread across multiple locations, 3/23 represents the Marine Corps Reserve’s commitment to maintaining a trained and ready infantry force that can augment the active component when the nation calls. The 23rd Marines have a storied combat history dating back to World War II, where they fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific campaign, including Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. Reserve Marines of 3/23 have continued to answer the call in the Global War on Terror, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan alongside their active duty counterparts. Their motto, “Non Sibi Sed Patriae” — Not for Self, But for Country — captures the spirit of citizen Marines who maintain careers, families, and a second life as combat-ready infantry.
