Description
**Officially Licensed USMC VMA-224 Fighting Bengals Sticker — Marine Attack Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
The Fighting Bengals — from Wildcats over Henderson Field to Skyhawks at Chu Lai, VMA-224 carried the attack mission across three wars and four decades.
VMA-224, the “Fighting Bengals,” was commissioned on May 1, 1942, as VMF-224 at MCAS Ewa, Hawaii. Flying F4F Wildcats and SBD Dauntlesses, the Bengals first saw combat during the desperate Guadalcanal Campaign, contributing significantly to the American victory over Henderson Field. After the war, the squadron transitioned through F4U Corsairs, F2H Banshees, and F9F Panthers before becoming the first Marine unit to field the Douglas A4D Skyhawk in September 1956. As VMA-224, the Bengals deployed to Chu Lai, South Vietnam in 1965, operating their “Scooters” from the expeditionary airfield in close air support of Marine ground forces for nearly a year of intense combat operations.
