Pop-A-Smoke Iraq — honoring Marine rotary-wing veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

This Pop-A-Smoke patch honors the Marine helicopter community’s service throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom. From the initial invasion in 2003 through years of counterinsurgency operations, Marine rotary-wing aircrew flew every mission type in the Iraqi theater — assault transport, close air support, armed reconnaissance, medevac, resupply, and command and control. The Iraq theater saw the combat debut of the MV-22 Osprey alongside the veteran CH-46, CH-53, UH-1, and AH-1 fleet. The Pop-A-Smoke community shared the common experience of flying in Iraq’s deserts, cities, and river valleys.
