The 3rd Marine Regiment is one of the most storied infantry regiments in the United States Marine Corps, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. The regiment has a distinguished combat history that stretches from World War II through the Global War on Terror, and it continues to serve as a key maneuver element in the Pacific theater.

Activated during World War II, the 3rd Marines fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific campaign, including Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. On Iwo Jima, the regiment’s Marines stormed the black volcanic beaches under devastating Japanese fire in one of the most iconic assaults in military history. In Vietnam, the 3rd Marines were among the first ground combat units deployed, fighting in the fierce battles of the northern provinces. More recently, the regiment has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing its tradition of aggressive infantry combat. Under Marine Corps Force Design 2030, the 3rd Marines has been reorganized as the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, transitioning to a new role focused on stand-in forces and distributed maritime operations in the Indo-Pacific.
