USMC 1st Marines 1st MARDIV Sticker
United States Marine Corps — 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division
The 1st Marine Regiment is one of the most storied and decorated infantry regiments in the history of the United States Marine Corps, activated on 27 November 1913 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The regiment served with distinction during World War I at Belleau Wood, Soissons, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918, earning a legacy of battlefield tenacity that would define the unit for over a century.
During World War II, the 1st Marines fought in some of the Pacific Theater’s most brutal campaigns — from the defense of Guadalcanal beginning 7 August 1942 to the hellish Battle of Peleliu in September 1944, where the regiment suffered over 1,700 casualties in some of the war’s most savage fighting. In the Korean War, the 1st Marines were part of the legendary Chosin Reservoir campaign in November-December 1950, fighting through encirclement by Chinese forces in sub-zero temperatures. During the Vietnam War, the regiment conducted extensive combat operations in I Corps Tactical Zone from 1966 to 1971.
In the 21st century, the 1st Marine Regiment led the assault on An Nasiriyah during the initial invasion of Iraq in March 2003 and conducted sustained counterinsurgency operations throughout Al Anbar Province during multiple rotations. Today, the 1st Marines serve under the 1st Marine Division at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, continuing their tradition as one of the Marine Corps’ premier ground combat regiments.
