VA-176, the “Thunderbolts,” was established on June 4, 1955, as an Atlantic Fleet attack squadron flying the Douglas AD-6 Skyraider. The squadron made its mark in Vietnam when, on October 9, 1966, LTJG William T. Patton shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-17 while flying a propeller-driven A-1H Skyraider from USS Intrepid — the first and only instance of a prop-driven aircraft downing an enemy jet during the Vietnam War. VA-176 deployed to Vietnam three times aboard USS Intrepid as part of CVW-10, the first all-attack air wing ever formed. After transitioning to the A-6 Intruder in 1967, the Thunderbolts made eighteen Mediterranean deployments and saw combat action during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada (1983) and the Lebanon crisis. The squadron earned three consecutive Battle “E” awards (1988–1991) before decommissioning on October 30, 1992.
