Assigned to Carrier Air Wing 11, the Iron Tigers made a single deployment aboard USS Shangri-La to the Western Pacific. The F11F Tiger was a revolutionary aircraft for its time, featuring area-ruled fuselage design for supersonic performance, but its limited range and the arrival of superior aircraft like the F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantom led to a brief operational career. VA-156 was eventually redesignated VF-111, taking on the legendary “Sundowners” identity — a lineage that would go on to fly F-8 Crusaders and F-14 Tomcats through the Vietnam era and beyond, including appearing in the 1986 film Top Gun.
