VA-83, the “Rampagers,” was an Atlantic Fleet attack squadron based at NAS Cecil Field, Florida. The squadron flew A-4 Skyhawks and later A-7 Corsair IIs from carriers including USS Forrestal, USS Saratoga, and USS America. The Rampagers deployed repeatedly to the Mediterranean Sea and Southeast Asia, conducting strike missions during the Vietnam War. During their Mediterranean deployments, VA-83 maintained a forward presence during periods of heightened tension in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. The squadron compiled a distinguished record of combat operations, earning multiple awards for operational excellence and safety. VA-83 was eventually redesignated VFA-83 and transitioned to the F/A-18C Hornet, continuing the Rampager tradition as a strike fighter squadron.
