VA-127 Batmen — the aggressor squadron that taught Navy pilots how to fight by trying to beat them every day. If TOPGUN had a sparring partner, the Batmen were in the ring.

VA-127, the “Batmen,” was established on June 15, 1962, at NAS Lemoore, California. Originally tasked with fleet replacement pilot training and jet transition on the A-4 Skyhawk, the squadron evolved into one of the Navy’s premier adversary units. In 1970, VA-127 became the only A-4 Replacement Air Wing squadron in the Navy, training pilots in weapons delivery, carrier qualifications, aerial refueling, and defensive tactics. By 1975, the CNO officially tasked VA-127 with air combat maneuvering adversary training — flying as the “bad guys” to train fleet fighter and attack pilots in realistic dissimilar air combat. The Batmen also expanded their mission internationally, training pilots from the Argentine Navy and Singapore Air Defense Command. Later redesignated VFA-127 “Cylons” and transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet, continuing the adversary mission until disestablishment in 1996.
