VA-114 Pegasus — WWII dive-bombers who helped sink Japanese carriers at Cape Engaño, then sailed the world in peacetime before standing down.
VA-114, known as “Pegasus,” was established as Bombing Squadron VB-11 on October 10, 1942, and redesignated VA-114 on July 15, 1948. During World War II, VB-11 flew SB2C Helldiver dive-bombers from USS Hornet in the Pacific Theater, striking targets across Formosa, the Philippines, Indochina, and the South China Sea. In October 1944, the squadron participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, scoring hits on Japanese battleships and cruisers in the Sibuyan Sea. In the Battle off Cape Engaño on October 25, 1944, VB-11 helped sink four Japanese carriers. Postwar, VA-114 operated from USS Valley Forge, conducting operations in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean before conducting the famous Operation Pinwheel mooring in Bergen, Norway using aircraft engine power. VA-114 was disestablished on December 1, 1949.
