Description
**Officially Licensed HMM-161 Phrog Phlyers Sticker — Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron Vinyl Sticker**
The Phrog Phlyers — a nickname earned by thousands of hours hauling Marines in the beloved CH-46 “Phrog.” HMM-161 wrote the book on Marine helicopter transport.
HMM-161, known as the “Greyhawks” and “Phrog Phlyers,” holds the distinction of being the first helicopter transport squadron in the armed forces, commissioned on January 15, 1951, at MCAS El Toro, California. Deploying to Korea just eight months later, HMR-161 carried out a string of firsts: the first ship-to-shore troop movement by helicopter in combat, the first battalion-sized helicopter lift, and the first helicopter combat resupply mission. In 1962, the squadron assisted NASA in recovering astronaut Wally Schirra and his Mercury capsule from the Pacific. Deploying to Vietnam in 1965 and again in 1968, the Greyhawks flew UH-34s and CH-46 Sea Knights in intense combat operations. In 1990, HMM-161 deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Storm, and later supported multiple OIF deployments from Al Taqaddum, Iraq. Now VMM-161, flying MV-22 Ospreys from MCAS Miramar.
