HSM-73 “Battle Cats” is a Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron flying the MH-60R Seahawk out of NAS North Island, San Diego, California. The Battle Cats’ primary mission is sea control — conducting anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and maritime strike operations as an integral part of the carrier air wing. Originally established as HSL-43 in October 1984, the squadron was the Navy’s first operational LAMPS Mk III squadron and pioneered capabilities including the first Night Vision Goggle-capable detachment and the first direct operational support of a Marine Expeditionary Unit. The MH-60R “Romeo” is the Navy’s most advanced maritime helicopter, armed with torpedoes and Hellfire missiles, equipped with dipping sonar, ESM, FLIR, and multi-mission radar — making the Battle Cats one of the most lethal anti-submarine units afloat.
