VMM-265 “Dragons” is a Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron operating the MV-22B Osprey out of MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan under Marine Aircraft Group 36 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Commissioned on October 1, 1962, the Dragons have been forward-deployed to the Western Pacific for decades, serving as one of the Marine Corps’ most operationally active tiltrotor squadrons. From Vietnam-era CH-46 operations through Desert Storm, East Timor’s Operation Stabilise, and multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, VMM-265 has been in the fight. During Desert Shield, the Dragons participated in the largest NVG troop lift in Marine Corps history in Oman, and their amphibious feint into Kuwait successfully diverted Saddam’s forces from the main attack. These flightline qualification patches represent the hard-earned milestones that VMM-265 maintainers and crew chiefs achieve on the line — the daily grind of keeping Ospreys mission-ready in the humid Pacific heat.
