Operation Shufly Jungle Fighters Patch — Embroidered Patch

From the Delta to the Highlands

The jungle didn’t care about doctrine. It had its own rules, and the Marines of Operation Shufly learned them the hard way. This Jungle Fighters patch honors the aircrew and support personnel who adapted Marine helicopter tactics to the unforgiving terrain of Vietnam’s jungles, rice paddies, and mountain valleys during the earliest phase of American military involvement.

The Marines who served in Operation Shufly from 1962 to 1965 were pioneers of combat helicopter warfare in Southeast Asia. They developed the Eagle Flight concept — four helicopters loaded with ARVN soldiers orbiting above an operational area, ready to pounce on fleeing Viet Cong forces spotted by observation aircraft. They learned to fly in monsoon conditions that reduced visibility to near zero, to approach landing zones surrounded by triple-canopy jungle, and to operate from austere airfields with minimal support infrastructure. The Shufly Marines also suffered the earliest Marine helicopter casualties of the war, including the October 1962 crash that killed five Marines and two Navy Corpsmen during a search and rescue mission. These jungle fighters wrote the first chapter of Marine helicopter combat in Vietnam.

Perfect For:
Operation Shufly veterans, Vietnam-era helicopter crews, Marine aviation pioneers, jungle warfare enthusiasts, early Vietnam historians, and military patch collectors
