The Crossing the Line ceremony dates back centuries in maritime tradition, marking the moment when a ship passes from the Northern to the Southern Hemisphere. Sailors and Marines who have not yet crossed the equator are designated “Pollywogs” (or “Wogs”) and must undergo an initiation presided over by King Neptune and his Royal Court — typically the most senior Shellbacks aboard. The ceremony involves challenges, tasks, and a healthy dose of nautical hazing that transforms the Pollywog into a Shellback, earning the right to carry a certificate signed by Neptunus Rex himself.
