Electronic Attack Squadron 141 (VAQ-141), the “Shadowhawks,” is a United States Navy EA-18G Growler electronic attack squadron forward-deployed to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, as part of Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard USS Ronald Reagan. Established on July 1, 1987, at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, the Shadowhawks have provided electronic warfare support across every major operation from Desert Storm to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The squadron flew defense suppression cover for the rescue of downed Air Force pilot Captain Scott O’Grady over Bosnia and achieved a 100% mission success rate during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, launching 21 HARMs while flying over 400 combat hours. As the only permanently forward-deployed electronic attack squadron in the U.S. Navy, VAQ-141 is always first on station in the Indo-Pacific. This coffin-shaped shoulder patch carries the Shadowhawks’ “Death from the Shadows” motto in a format as intimidating as the squadron’s electronic warfare mission.
