In 1962, the Ugly Angels made history as the first Marine aircraft squadron to deploy to South Vietnam, landing UH-34D helicopters at Sóc Trăng under Operation Shufly. The nickname evolved from “Archie’s Angels” — after their commanding officer LtCol Archie Clapp — to “Ugly Angels.” The squadron served through Vietnam, Desert Storm, Haiti, and Afghanistan before deactivating in 2012.
