VMFAT-201 Hawks — the East Coast’s answer to the Phantom training mission. Before VMFAT-101 absorbed them, the Hawks were turning out combat-ready F-4 crews at Cherry Point.
VMFAT-201, the “Hawks,” was the Marine Corps’ East Coast F-4 Phantom II Fleet Replacement Squadron based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, under the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron trained replacement pilots and radar intercept officers for fleet VMFA squadrons deploying to Vietnam and the Western Pacific during the height of the war. In July 1974, VMFAT-201’s assets were absorbed by VMFAT-101 at MCAS Yuma, consolidating all Marine F-4 training under one squadron and making VMFAT-101 the largest fixed-wing tactical jet squadron in the Corps. The Hawks’ legacy lives on through every Phantom crew they sent to the fleet.
