Marine Aircraft Group MAG-25 — USMC Embroidered Patch

The Flying Boxcars

Before there were C-130s and MV-22s, MAG-25 was flying the lifeline. As the nucleus of the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command, this group kept Marines alive and fighting by delivering ammunition, food, medical supplies, and reinforcements to the most forward airstrips in the Pacific. This patch honors the Marines who made it possible.

Commissioned on 1 June 1942 at Camp Kearney, California, MAG-25 deployed to the Pacific and began flying missions in support of the Battle of Guadalcanal in September 1942. The first MAG-25 aircraft to land at Henderson Field carried the commanding general of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing himself. The group formed the nucleus of SCAT — the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command — providing rapid transport of personnel, cargo, and aeromedical evacuation across the combat zone. Earning the Distinguished Unit Citation as part of the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal, MAG-25 later served in the Korean War before deactivation. Their legacy as the “Flying Boxcars” lives on in Marine aviation transport heritage.

Perfect For:
MAG-25 veterans and their families, Marine Corps transport aviation historians, Guadalcanal campaign collectors, SCAT history enthusiasts, and USMC heritage patch collectors.
