VAW-125 “Tigertails” (also known as the “Torch Bearers”) is a Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron flying the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye — the most technologically advanced airborne early warning and command-and-control platform in the world. Established on 1 October 1968 at NAS Norfolk, VAW-125 has been a trailblazer from day one: they were the first East Coast squadron with E-2Bs in 1968, among the first with E-2Cs in 1975, and the first squadron anywhere to operate the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye in 2014. Their operational history reads like a highlight reel of naval aviation’s most critical moments — from controlling strikes during Desert Storm (where their controllers vectored the only Navy fixed-wing air-to-air kills of the war) to talking down the hijackers of the Achille Lauro to providing command and control over New York City in the days after 9/11. Now forward-deployed to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan as part of CVW-5, the Tigertails continue serving as the digital quarterback of the carrier strike group.
