Pop-A-Smoke Somalia — honoring Marine rotary-wing veterans of operations in the Horn of Africa.
This Pop-A-Smoke patch honors Marine helicopter aircrew who served during operations in Somalia, including Operation Restore Hope beginning in December 1992. Marine CH-46s and CH-53Es transported troops from ships offshore into Mogadishu, while AH-1W Cobras flew armed patrols over the city and UH-1N Hueys provided utility support. Marine rotary-wing units operated in an austere, hostile environment where clan warfare, armed militias, and the complete collapse of civil society made every mission unpredictable. Somalia tested the Marine helicopter community in ways no training exercise could replicate.
