The Marine Expeditionary Brigade deployed to Afghanistan as Task Force Leatherneck, serving as the ground combat element in Helmand Province — one of the most contested areas of Operation Enduring Freedom. Marine infantry, artillery, aviation, and logistics forces conducted counterinsurgency operations across southern Afghanistan, clearing and holding territory in some of the war’s fiercest fighting.
