The Military Order of the Devil Dogs is the “fun and honor society” of the Marine Corps League — a fraternal organization open to Marine Corps League members who have demonstrated outstanding service and dedication. The Devil Dogs name traces back to the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, where German soldiers reportedly called the attacking Marines “Teufel Hunden” (Devil Dogs) in recognition of their ferocity in combat. The 5th and 6th Marine Regiments earned the name through bayonet charges, mustard gas, and six brutal assaults that secured the wood and entered Marine Corps legend. The Military Order of the Devil Dogs preserves that fighting spirit through camaraderie, community service, and the distinctive culture that sets Marines apart.
