Every battalion earns its nickname through action, and 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines earned “The Professionals” through decades of combat that demanded nothing less than perfection under fire. This patch represents one of the 1st Marine Regiment’s finest infantry battalions.

Based at Camp Pendleton as part of the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 2/1 has deployed to every major conflict the Marine Corps has fought since World War II. The battalion’s Marines fought across the Pacific in WWII, at Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, through the jungles of Vietnam, across the deserts of Kuwait in Desert Storm, and through the streets of Iraq during multiple OIF deployments. The “Professionals” nickname reflects the battalion’s reputation for disciplined, effective combat operations regardless of the environment or enemy. When 2/1 deploys, commanders know they’re getting a battalion that will execute the mission with skill, aggression, and professionalism.
