USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN-624 Patch — Lafayette-Class Ballistic Missile Submarine Embroidered Patch

Peace through silent strength — USS Woodrow Wilson.

USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN-624) was a Lafayette-class fleet ballistic missile submarine named after the 28th President of the United States, who led America through World War I and championed the League of Nations in pursuit of lasting world peace. Ironically, the submarine bearing his name carried the most destructive weapons in the American arsenal, serving as a key component of the nation’s nuclear deterrent throughout the Cold War.

Commissioned in 1963, USS Woodrow Wilson was among the first Lafayette-class submarines to enter service, armed with Polaris A-2 and later A-3 submarine-launched ballistic missiles. The submarine conducted numerous strategic deterrent patrols, spending months at a time submerged in the depths of the ocean, invisible to Soviet surveillance and ready to strike at a moment’s notice. President Wilson had once said, “The world must be made safe for democracy” — and the submarine bearing his name helped ensure that democracy survived the Cold War by making nuclear aggression against the United States suicidal for any adversary.

This patch preserves the legacy of SSBN-624 and the deterrent mission.

Perfect For: SSBN-624 crew veterans, Lafayette-class submarine enthusiasts, Cold War nuclear deterrent historians, and presidential namesake submarine collectors.

Making the world safe — SSBN-624.
