Description

**MAG-39 PVC Patch — Marine Aircraft Group 39 USMC PVC Patch**

MAG-39 — “America’s MAG.” First activated at Quang Tri Airfield during the height of the Vietnam War, reactivated at Camp Pendleton, and still providing the rotary-wing and tiltrotor muscle for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and I MEF. When Marines need air support, MAG-39 delivers.

Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) was first activated as Provisional MAG-39 on 15 April 1968 at Quang Tri Combat Base, Republic of Vietnam, when the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing needed to reduce the span of control for MAG-36 in the face of increasing operational demands in northern Quang Tri Province. Prov MAG-39 supported the 3rd Marine Division in numerous combat operations including Operations Scotland II, Lancaster, Kentucky, and Mameluke Thrust. Reactivated on 1 September 1975 for the evacuation of Saigon during Operation Frequent Wind — where MAG-39 helicopters evacuated 7,000 Americans and foreign nationals — the group was permanently reactivated at Camp Pendleton on 1 September 1978 under the 3rd MAW. Today MAG-39 is composed of AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom light attack squadrons, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor squadrons, and the H-1 Fleet Replacement Squadron, with elements having participated in Desert Storm, Restore Hope in Somalia, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.
