This Pop-A-Smoke patch honors Marine helicopter aircrew who served during operations in Liberia, including Operation Sharp Edge in 1990-1991 and subsequent deployments. During Sharp Edge, the 22nd and 26th Marine Expeditionary Units conducted one of the longest non-combatant evacuation operations in modern naval history, rescuing over 2,400 civilians from the war-torn capital of Monrovia as civil war raged around them. Marine helicopters flew evacuees from the U.S. Embassy compound to ships offshore, often under sporadic fire, while AH-1 Cobras provided armed overwatch. Liberia tested everything the MEU(SOC) concept was designed for.
