Commander Task Force 172 (CTF-172) is the maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft (MPRA) task force that operates during the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise — the world’s largest international maritime exercise. Since its inception in 1971, RIMPAC has brought together naval forces from dozens of nations in and around the Hawaiian Islands to enhance interoperability, strengthen military-to-military relationships, and ensure the safety of sea lanes across the Indo-Pacific region. RIMPAC 2026 marks the 30th iteration of the exercise and is expected to be the largest ever conducted.
CTF-172 commands the maritime patrol aircraft element of RIMPAC, coordinating P-8A Poseidon, P-3 Orion, and allied MPRA platforms from nations including the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. Operating from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Marine Corps Base Hawaii, CTF-172 conducts anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions that form the backbone of RIMPAC’s maritime domain awareness. The task force has consistently achieved near-perfect mission completion rates while flying over a thousand hours per exercise, demonstrating the extraordinary skill and professionalism of its multinational crews.
