VAQ-144 “Main Battery” is one of the U.S. Navy’s newest Electronic Attack Squadrons, established on October 1, 2021, at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, to fill a critical gap in carrier-based electronic warfare capability. Flying the EA-18G Growler, Main Battery brings suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), electronic jamming, and precision strike to the carrier air wing — armed with AGM-88 HARM and AARGM anti-radiation missiles alongside AIM-120 AMRAAMs and advanced jamming pods. The squadron’s name was carefully selected from a distinguished list of former Navy attack and electronic warfare squadrons, honoring the legacy of naval firepower. VAQ-144 wasted no time making history — deploying in late September 2024 with CVW-1 aboard USS Harry S. Truman, the squadron conducted combat operations against Houthi targets in the Red Sea, flying strike missions with rare four-missile loadouts against enemy radar and air defense systems. This tail flash patch captures Main Battery’s distinctive identity.
