Finland’s coastal defense tradition developed during the Cold War as part of the nation’s total defense strategy against potential Soviet amphibious invasion across the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic. The Rannikkojääkärit (Coastal Jaegers) are specialized light infantry units trained for operations in Finland’s vast archipelago — over 40,000 islands and islets along the coast. Finnish coastal defense forces specialize in anti-ship warfare, mine warfare, and guerrilla-style operations among the islands, using the complex terrain to deny access to superior naval forces.
