Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) is the U.S. Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed carrier air wing, embarked aboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) and based out of Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan (with squadrons transitioning to Iwakuni). CVW-5 is part of Carrier Strike Group 5 (CSG-5) and is the tip of the spear for American naval aviation power in the Western Pacific. The air wing’s “Team Badman” identity reflects the collective esprit de corps of its diverse squadrons.
CVW-5’s composition includes some of the Navy’s most capable squadrons: VFA-27 “Royal Maces,” VFA-102 “Diamondbacks,” VFA-195 “Dambusters,” and VFA-147 “Argonauts” flying the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; VAQ-141 “Shadowhawks” in the EA-18G Growler; VAW-125 “Tigertails” in the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye; HSC-12 “Golden Falcons” in the MH-60S Seahawk; HSM-77 “Saberhawks” in the MH-60R Seahawk; and VRM-30 Detachment providing C-2A Greyhound logistics support. Together, these squadrons carry the tail code “NF” and provide the full spectrum of naval aviation capability.
