Some units carry a legacy so deep it practically defined Marine aviation itself. If you served with MAG-11, you were part of the oldest aircraft group in the Marine Corps — a lineage stretching back to 1921 when its ancestral units first took shape as Aircraft Squadron, East Coast Expeditionary Force. This patch represents more than just a unit — it’s a piece of Marine Corps aviation history.
Officially commissioned on 1 August 1941 at Quantico, Virginia, MAG-11 was the Marine Corps’ first aircraft group. From defending San Diego after Pearl Harbor to flying combat in the skies over Da Nang with F-8 Crusaders, F-4 Phantoms, A-6 Intruders, and A-4 Skyhawks, MAG-11 set the standard. During Desert Storm, the group became the largest Marine fixed-wing air group in history, flying over 7,500 combat sorties and 16,400 hours without a single loss of life or aircraft. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, MAG-11 aviators flew 120-130 sorties per day and dropped over 4.2 million pounds of ordnance. Now based at MCAS Miramar, the group continues its mission under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
