The Griffin — a mythological creature combining the eagle and the lion — served as the squadron’s mascot, symbolizing the airborne power and ground-force courage that defined Marine helicopter operations. HMM-266 deployed aboard amphibious ships and to forward operating locations before transitioning to the MV-22B Osprey and redesignating as VMM-266.
