3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines — known as “Dark Horse” — is one of the most combat-tested infantry battalions in the modern Marine Corps, with a deployment record in Iraq and Afghanistan that reads like a chronology of the hardest fights of the Global War on Terror.

3/3 serves as part of the 3rd Marine Regiment and has been based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The battalion’s WWII heritage includes the 3rd Marine Division’s Pacific campaigns, but it’s the battalion’s modern combat record that has cemented its reputation. In 2010, 3/3 “Dark Horse” deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan — one of the most dangerous districts in Helmand Province — where the battalion suffered 25 Marines killed in action and over 200 wounded during a seven-month deployment. The battalion’s courage and sacrifice in Sangin drew national attention and reinforced the Marine Corps’ reputation for operating in the most contested battlespaces.
