2nd Battalion, 8th Marines (2/8) “America’s Battalion” is one of the most storied infantry battalions in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the Fleet Marine Force and based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The honorary title “America’s Battalion” was bestowed in recognition of 2/8’s extraordinary service and sacrifice, making it one of only a handful of Marine units to carry such a distinguished designation.

2nd Battalion, 8th Marines has a combat history that spans nearly every major conflict of the 20th and 21st centuries. The battalion fought with distinction in World War II, including the brutal Battle of Tarawa where Marines suffered devastating casualties storming the fortified Japanese-held atoll. In more recent decades, 2/8 has deployed to operations in Beirut, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, consistently demonstrating the fighting spirit that earned it the America’s Battalion title. The 8th Marine Regiment itself carries the French Fourragère, awarded for heroism during World War I, and 2/8 carries that tradition of valor forward with every deployment.
