The 23rd Marines — Fighting Fourth’s Assault Regiment

The 23rd Marine Regiment fought alongside the 24th and 25th Marines as part of the 4th Marine Division’s devastating Pacific campaign, storming fortified Japanese islands in some of the war’s most intense amphibious operations.

The 23rd Marines served as one of the infantry regiments of the 4th Marine Division during World War II, fighting at Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. At Saipan in June 1944, the regiment faced fierce Japanese resistance during the invasion of the Mariana Islands, a campaign that brought American forces within strategic bombing range of the Japanese homeland. At Iwo Jima, the 23rd Marines fought through the island’s central volcanic terrain against defenders who had spent months fortifying every ridge, ravine, and cave. The regiment helped the 4th Division earn two Presidential Unit Citations during its 13-month combat journey across the Pacific. Like its parent division, the 23rd was reactivated as a reserve regiment, continuing to provide trained Marines for active service.
